The Used Exotic Buying Checklist

Use this one-page list before you buy any used supercar or exotic. For the full explanation, costs and sources behind each item, read our pre-purchase inspection guide.

1. Before you see the car

  • Set a total budget, including running costs, not just the price. See the real cost of owning a used supercar.
  • Get insurance quotes for the exact model.
  • Find an independent specialist for that brand and book the inspection.
  • Ask why the car is being sold, and how long the seller has owned it.

2. Paperwork

  • VIN matches across the body, VIN plate, title and service records.
  • Open recalls checked on NHTSA's recall lookup, plus confirmation from a franchised dealer.
  • Complete service invoices, with no unexplained gaps.
  • Vehicle history report reviewed (but not trusted on its own).
  • Original window sticker or build sheet, to confirm options.
  • Documentation for any modifications.
  • Clean title, with no salvage, rebuilt or flood brand.

3. Pre-purchase inspection

  • Paint-depth readings on every panel, plus panel gaps.
  • Glass date codes, wheels, and tire age.
  • On a lift, with the undertray removed where possible: leaks, impact damage, accident repairs.
  • A true cold start, on video if possible.
  • Compression and leak-down tests where appropriate.
  • Full diagnostic scan of every module, using the factory tool.
  • Gearbox and clutch data, plus over-rev records where available.
  • Brakes measured. On carbon-ceramics, an estimate of remaining life.
  • Dampers, suspension, nose lift and convertible roof tested.
  • A road test long enough to bring the car fully up to temperature.
  • A written report with estimated repair costs.

4. Decide

  • Must-fix items are repaired or taken off the price.
  • Upcoming wear items and services are used to negotiate.
  • Walk away if the seller refuses an inspection, the VINs don't match, or the report shows hidden structural repairs.

General information, not financial or mechanical advice. Every car is different. Always rely on a qualified specialist's inspection of the specific vehicle.
